Normal format this week as regular, hard hitting analysis comes with an array of guests. ESPN super analyst Chris Mortensen will be on, as well as Marwan Maaloof, Ken Moll, and Keith Kidd of Scouts' INC.
-Vikings-Bears will be interesting, and the balance of the game will hinge on whether Brian Greise can effectively throw the ball against a weak Minnesota secondary. I'm assuming that the Vikings won't be able to do much offensively, and that the Vikes will stuff Cedric Benson and the rushing game. The deciding factor will ultimately be Devin Hester. The game may come down to a defensive or special teams score, and I give that edge and 5.5 points to Chicago.
-Cleveland excels on even numbered weeks. That may sound like someone picking an NCAA tourney team by pretty colors or mascot, but it's a tried and true trend this season. It also helps that the Dolphins, led by Cleo Lemon are terrible. Expect the Browns to go vertical with Edwards and Winslow, and for Ronnie Brown to have another good game in a losing cause. Cleveland at home with the 4.5
-Green Bay is coming off a loss against the Bears, as they host the red hot Redskins. Ken Moll will start of the analysis of this one:
"Sprung, The Packers need to run the ball effectively. It's tough to stay with that approach when you get stuffed a few times but it's the best thing for Brett. He'll always get his throws in but keep the skins defense honest. The Packers defense will take care of itself."
Moll is assuming that the Packers will stuff the Washington run, and force Jason Campbell to make plays. If either running game works, that team would have a decided advantage. That being said, assuming the runs are neutralized on both sides, I give the edge to Favre and the home team plus the 3.5.
-As an aside, check out Thursday's New York Times discussing a riveting piece about the Odell Thurman case. The Bengals need a win over the Chiefs to save their season, and Kansas City must control the clock with Larry Johnson against a poor Cincinnati rush defense. That's the only way KC has a chance. I will now introduce to you a matchup of old dogs (Ty Law and Patrick Surtain) against new tricks (Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmanzadeh). Old dogs used to be new tricks, but new tricks now leave old dogs in the dust and earn the Jumpsuits at least a field goal win.
-I regret not having an insider's take on the Titans-Bucs game, because it will be a very underrated contest. Tennessee's D has been greatly improved, with stellar play from Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch. With the Tampa rushing attack in the situation it's in, the Bucs will rely on big plays from Jeff Garcia. The Titans will rely on Vince Young. I have upset music singing in my brain, and the Titans will steal a road dog win. Woof.
-The Jets will be going back to the 60's with their old blue and gold New York Titans jerseys. Let's hope they're not ugly like the Eagles Parakeet duds, but Gang Green fans should hope for similar Parakeet results. I asked Marwan Maaloof if this game was an elimination matchup, with both teams only possessing a win each:
"SOS, You can classify it as an elimination game. I've said all along that there can't be anymore talk of "still early in the season". The route to the playoffs begins now!"
Yeah! I'm fired up now! The Jets have Chad Pennington! They're screwed! Eagles plus 2.5, I need to calm down.
-If Baltimore scores more than 10 points, they'll probably cover against the Rams. The team did put 31 up on Arizona in a loss, but that's not the Ravens D. All Baltimore has to do is pound McGahee and let the D do the work, Ravens plus 9.5.
-Big divisional game between the Jaguars and Texans, and it should be close. Keith Kidd told me that the Jags should win 20-10, but I'll take Houston to cover the 6.5 here.
-Football math! Carr+Testaverde+Moore= bad QB option. Unless the Panthers find a way to majorly D up against the Cardinals, I'll give Arizona the edge. No symbolic James reference there, Cards plus 3.5.
-San Diego shredded the Broncos and have the elite confidence that even a horrible coach like Norv Turner can't take away from them. Here's the plan, tranquilize Turner, give the ball to LT, and beat Oakland by 10+.
-As a Cowboys fan, I'm pumpedupbutscaredashell about this Duel in Dallas (TM??) against the Patriots. A big factor in this matchup will be what defenses Bill Belichik throws at Tony Romo, who managed to look worse than Pennington and John David Booty combined. Chris Mortensen takes us inside:
"Eleven men on the field...just kidding. Belichick typically decides to take away the most important factor/player from an offense and see how that team responds. In this case, I would expect him to do all he can to neutralize Terrell Owens and maybe Witten, the tight end."
With the multiple "scenes" Owens had this week, he needs to be fed the ball early and often. If that doesn't happen, and New England is able to spread out the Dallas defense, it could get uglier than a drunk Lindsey Lohan with a Parakeet jersey on. I'll go with the Pats with the 5.
-New Orleans hasn't proven jack, expect the Seahawks to rebound and romp over the Saints. Seattle plus the 7, big game for Alexander and 40+ throws for Brees.
-Will this be a trap game for the Giants? I doubt it, but it may end up being close in Atlanta. I'll cautiously take New York and the 3.5

Around The Majors- Friday
Jeff Francis was excellent as Colorado won their 18th game in 19 tries as they beat Arizona 5-1 in game one of an NLCS that featured many more water bottles than good moments for the Snakes at Chase Field that barely sold out. Brandon Webb couldn't hold up his end of the bargain, and Herges, Affeldt, Fuentes, and Corpas sealed the deal. They play game 2 at 10:15 with Ubaldo Jimenez taking on Doug Davis.
ALCS Pick
Yes, Boston got tremendous pitching in their sweep of the Angels, but Ortiz and Ramirez were the only Red Sox producing on offense. The cleanup duo hit over .500 with 4 homers and 7 ribs, but the rest of the team in the series hit below .220. With Sabathia and Carmona, a hot nasty bullpen, and a team that fared so rediculously well with RISP and 2 out I'm gonna go with Cleveland. Obviously the Sprung hating Boston thing is definitely a factor, but Ortiz and Ramirez can't have slow pitch softball numbers when 3-4 of those games are going to be against the 2 Indian aces. Beckett faces Sabathia in a Cy Young showdown at 7pm.
-Frank Wren is the new GM of the Braves as John Schuerholz has stepped down. Read Thunder Thursday from yesterday to see my view on this subject on SOS2.
-Dusty Baker has interviewerd for the Reds managerial job, as has interrim skipper Pete Mackanin.
-Bobby Kielty is 9-29 with 2 homers lifetime off of CC Sabathia, sitting JD Drew for game one, and reducing the blood pressure in the Boston area immeasurably. "He was brought in here to give us some right-handed punch," Said Francona, what he was really thinking was that previous statement without the right-handed in Drew's case.
-The orginazational meetings to decide the fate of Joe Torre will be tabled until at least Monday, and Torre would likely return if he takes a pay cut according to the New York Post. The Post also says that Scott Boras could be looking for an A-Rod contract of 12 years 360 million. Torre could take a spot in the front office, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The MST also says that Torii Hunter will stay with the Twins if the offer is right.
-Yankees bullpen coach Joe Kerrigan will pursue other options in baseball, and the Leo Mazzone rumors may begin according to the Bergen Record.
-Roger Clemens has left the door open to come back, nobody cares.
-Nats pitcher Shawn Hill had surgery on his non throwing shoulder and will be ready for Spring Training.

NBA Today
Scores, news, and notes today in the NBA.
The NBA Europe tour went to Spain yesterday, and Darko Milicic had 13 points and 7 rebounds as Memphis defeated MMT Estudiantes. Real Madrid pulled off a 104-103 upset of the Raptors, despite 23 and 7 from Andrea Bargnani. At a silent Madison Square Garden, the Knicks routed Macabi Tel Aviv, as New York had 7 players in double figures. There was no reaction to Isiah Thomas, though that should change during the regular season. Houston hammered Greek power Panathinaikos as Yao scored 21 and grabbed 8 boards. Atlanta edged Charlotte 109-104 as Joe Johnson led all scorers with 25. Detroit and Cleveland went to OT, but the Pistons came away with the 96-90 win despite 17 from LeBron James. Phoenix won at Sacramento 110-99 as disgruntled Shawn Marion scored 18, and new Sun Grant Hill scored 17. Kevin Martin and Quincy Douby led the Kings with 17 each. The Warriors beat the Lakers 119-106 as former D-Leaguer Kelenna Azubuike scored 22.
-Lakers owner Jerry Buss is now open to offers for Kobe Bryant. It would've been better if he admitted this before, because it's now unlikely that teams will make deals until December at the earliest.
-Wizards Center and Syracuse alum Etan Thomas underwent open heart surgery in Minnesota and should be OK. Meanwhile, Washington might look for a big man such as PJ Brown, but Coach Eddie Jordan says that he's satisfied with his frontcourt according to the Washington Post.
-According to all New York papers, it will be tough for Allen Houston to make the Knicks roster. He starts his comeback today.
-This is a make or break year for Carlos Delfino, according to the Detroit Free Press.

ALCS: Indians vs. Red Sox
On Friday night, the Indians come to Fenway to open up the ALCS against the Red Sox. Both teams played really well in the ALDS, in which the Red Sox clobbered the Angels, and the Indians got past the Yankees. Both teams have strength in their Starting Rotation. The Sox are going to send out Josh Beckett, who has been brilliant this season, and the big lefty C.C. Sabathia is going to the mound for the the Tribe. Game two will have Curt Schilling facing Fausto Carmona, who was dominate for against the Yankees in game two of the DS. Both bullpens are also very good. The Sox have the trio of Gagne, Okajima, and Papelbon, while the Indians have Perez, Betancourt, and Borowski. This series will come down to the hitting, in which the Red Sox have a significant advantage. Papi and Co. will lead the Red Sox to another AL pennant.

Hockeytalk Thursday
I'm probably a bit rusty when it comes to hockey. But let's talk about the quick start the Islanders are having. They usually start well, but maybe their preseason fight against the Rangers sparked them. Their showing good chemistry with Comrie, Guerin, Satan, and Fedotenko, and DiPietro is playing well. Barry Melrose said that it would be an accomplishment if the Isles could reach the playoffs, but they look good so far as do the Flyers early on led by Paul Holmgren. One of their enforcers Jesse Boulerice will likely be suspended after crosschecking Vancouver's Ryan Kesler in the head. The Canuck Center believes that the Philly tough guy should be suspended 20 games. The Rangers have that elite talent every team looks for, but it'll take them a while to build chemistry and get hot, especially Scott Gomez. They're going to be dangerous once their power play gets to work. Ottawa's off to a sensational start, and they've sent Ray Emery on a 2 game AHL conditioning stint. The Sens and Penguins will open up next season in Prague. Interesting. Washington is off to an especially fast start, led by Ovechkin and some sick sweaters. Atlanta is a surprising 0-4. Columbus is one of those teams I see as a dark horse for a playoff spot. They're getting Michael Peca back, and they've just gotten 2 consecutive shutouts by young goaltender Pascal Leclair. The kid looks like the good, he's already on my salary cap team. Since longtime Blackhawks owner William Wirtz passed away, his son Rocky has taken over the team and has now reassigned longtime senior vice president Bob Pulford. Minnesota looks legit, San Jose look like Cup contenders, and the Ducks are once again among the West's upper echelon.

Thunder Thursday
I'll just freestyle it a little bit today.
First off, John Schuerholz leaving the Braves is HUGE! He was the most innovative and best GM of our generation, and he was unrivaled in developing a minor league system. The consecutive division titles with the constant roster turnover may never be seen on that scale again unless you spend 200 million bucks while rebuilding, and I'm a Yankee fan myself. After further review of the story, it was pointed out that he isn't leaving the orginazation, but there are still large rammifications.
I'm surprised that this isn't publicized, but this is the one year anniversary of the Cory Lidle plane crash that took over the news for a few days. It was a tragic development that will always go into my head on this day. When I first heard about the crash, I thought it was terrorism, but it just turned out to be a tragic loss of a Yankee. What are your thoughts one year later??
I'm not very good at Donald Trump impresseions, but Dave Wanstedt will be fired from Pitt, and it'll probably be because of last night's loss to Navy. He could've played it safe and tied it up on a 19 yard FG, but that gutsy call on 4th and goal from the 2 was basically all or nothing. The play failed, and he'll be on the unemployment line in 2008.
Can the Knicks do anything right? They signed Allen Houston when they have like a billion shooting guards, which is like bringing in Vinny Testaverde when you have 5 QB's who can do the same thing. Sure, the guy can still shoot, but can he catch and shoot off a cut, or take quality jumpers off screens? I doubt it.
Joey Crawford is back and officiating games. I just want to see him do a Spurs game in SA or Phoenix, if anyone shows up to the games in Phoenix. Which is a disgrace that they can't sell out NLCS games. If a market can't support a winner, move em!
Pat Riley has noticed that Antoine Walker is out of shape. Riley also noticed that Chad Pennington sucks, there are a lot of old people in Florida, and that the Dolphins haven't really been the same since Dan Marino. Perhaps I'll start calling coach Riley Obvious. Thanks for your time.

Around The Majors- Wednesday
All eyes may be on the Yankees right now, but there's an NLCS preview and some rumors to get to. The season is still going on, though it sure doesn't seem that way here in the Big Apple.
Will he stay, or will he go? That will be answered in at least a few days, said Yankees GM Brian Cashman. All the Pinstriped Honchos are meeting in Tampa to sort these things out. One of the potential Yankee managerial candidates is Tony LaRussa, and he's holding off on a return to St Louis depending on who they hire as GM, which is BS and really means that he wants the Yankees job and will take it if offered to him. I'm sure at some point St Louis will play hardball with him, but there may not be anyone better unless Torre does get canned. I'll have a full special report on the Yankees on Monday. You do not want to miss the Monday ATM.
Apparently, the Phillies decided that leading them to their first postseason in a decade and a half was enough to get Charlie Manuel an extension through 2010. The Tigers picked up Pudge Rodriguez's 13 million dollar option for next year which is smart considering the other available options at Catcher are weak, except for Jorge Posada who will hopefully not seriously entertain any other offers and come back to where he belongs. But he has a lot of leverage since he was the best backstop in baseball this season.
NLCS Preview
It's truly disgraceful that the Snakes can't sell out game 1, but the starting duels will be pretty darn good in the series, but especially in game one with Francis and Webb. Both bullpens have been exceptional, and the young Rockies hitters have done well, especially Troy Tulowitzki. The Diamondbacks have Chris Young stepping up in a huge way thus far this postseason, and it seems that Stephen Drew finally met his hype and potential in the Division Series. The Arizona pen has been excellent as well, but the momentum goes in Colorado's favor. Consider the trends as well: In every year since 2000, at least one Wild Card team has advanced to the World Series. Mets, Snakes, Angels, Marlins, Red Sox, Astros, and Tigers. With that said, Rockies in 6.
Rumors
-In the shocker of the century, Scott Boras wants A-Rod to become a free agent so Rodriguez could get 300 mill and Boras could collect even more cheese. Thank you, New York Times.
-Boras is also pointing out that A-Rod is a ratings booster, which would be beneficial for YES, SNY, NESN, and the new Angels network. (New York Post)
-Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press urges the Tigers to take a shot at A-Rod.
-The search for the Cardinals GM is on. Arizona assistant GM Peter Woodfork, Indians VP Chris Antonetti, and Toronto's Tony LaCava are early candidates according to the St Louis Post-Dispatch.
-The Tampa Tribune discusses Rays coaches: "The Rays could name a replacement by the end of the week for bench coach Bill Evers, whose contract was not renewed. Rangers third-base coach Don Wakamatsu and former Nationals and Diamondbacks coach Eddie Rodriguez are candidates to fill the job."

NFL Daily Presents: The Wednesday Rundown
Lots of injury replacement news, Vick news, and the search for a Bucs back that will likely get injured quite soon.
-Michael Vick may need to start washing dishes. An arbitor ruled in court yesterday that Vick should repay much of the bonus money he got while paying for the illegal dogfighting ring that could put the former Atlanta star in prison for 5 years. That could cost Vick as much as 20 million bucks. The Players Union will appeal, so this is far from over.
-Texans lineman Travis Johnson won't get fined for taunting a motionless Trent Green after he was hit it the knee coliding with the Miami QB who suffered a severe concussion and may never play again. Dolphins coach Cam Cameron told the Miami Herald that it was an unfortunate situation: "Sometimes in the heat of the moment, all of us do things we probably wish we wouldn't do or say...Let's say it like it is:You live and you learn." Trent Green learned allright, let's hope he can continue living a normal life.
-Dust off the old QB's! With Matt Whineart out for the season, Arizona has signed everyone's favorite former Niner and Buc Tim Rattay. And for the Panthers, live from Sunnydale Old Age Home, Vinny Testaverde! With Jake Delhomme out for the season, the man my father likes to call Interceptaverde will back up David Carr in Charlotte. In what has to be a sad story, Tampa Bay placed Chris Simms on IR and will likely not play another game with Tampa after leading them to the NFC South title in 2005. He hasn't played since rupturing his spleen early last season. An MRI on Kansas City QB Damon Huard showed no damage and will probably be ready to start on Sunday against Cincinnati.
-Just when you thought the bad behavior for the Bengals was over, it continues. CB Johnathan Joseph will be suspended for Sunday's game against the Chiefs and will forfeit salary for the game after that against the Jets for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
-Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett was charged Tuesday with two counts of disorderly conduct stemming from an altercation with two women in a bar this summer.
-According to the Tampa Tribune, the Bucs will look at Zach Crockett, Kevan Barlow, Eric Shelton, Tony Fisher, and Ciatrick Fason for a running back spot.
-Denver is working out at least 5 LB's, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

NLCS: Rockies vs. Diamondbacks
I will start this off by saying that both the Rockies and Diamondbacks have really impressed me with their NLDS sweeps. The Rockies destroyed the Phillies, and the Diamondbacks just out-played the Cubs. The series will start on Thursday, and it should be a very exciting match up. Game 1 will be Jeff Francis squaring up against Brandon Webb in Arizona. This is a very important game for the Rockies to win because Francis is their best starter, and after him, the Rockies have a lot of question marks in their rotation, even though Jimenez and Morales pitched well against the Phillies. On the other hand, the Rockies offense is better than the Diamondbacks. The Rockies offense is really hot right now, and on paper they have a clear offensive advantage over the Diamondback at every position, with the Diamondbacks only having a better center fielder. Both teams have very good relief pitching, and both closers pitched very well in their respective playoff games. I'm expecting a this series to be one better playoff series, and both teams will show you the way baseball is supposed to be played. In the end the Rockies, lead by the trio of Holliday, Helton, and Atkins, will shock the world and advance to the World Series. Rockies in 6
NFL Daily Presents: Analytical Assault Week 5
Lots of great games, key injuries, and a modern mystery. A 6 turnover QB who wins? Only in the NFL. Matt Williamson, Ken Moll, and Jeremy Green of Scouts' INC chime in.
- Joey Harrington, welcome back to being you. You got benched for Byron Leftwich and you returned as everyone favorite football failure since Leaf. This was actually a pretty porrly played game. VY threw 3 picks, nobody was able to get into a rhythem, there were defensive TD's on each side. The one positive that I could get is that the Titans defense looks good, and they came out with a win over a bad team. Just take the win and get back to work.
- If I had ties to the mafia and rooted for the Chiefs, I would arrange the death of Herm Edwards. Let's do some elementary football math: Croyle + LJ= pounding the football down the throats of the J-Ville D right? Not to Herm. They rushed the ball 10 times! 10 TIMES! They threw 43 times, and it was no wonder that they had to score their only points on the last play of the game. Gonzalez and Bowe had nice games, but that doesn't solve the problem of a more than 4:1 ratio with one of the best backs in the game. You have to use LJ as much as OJ uses alibis. The Jags know how to use their running game, with Freddy T and MJD and controlled the ball for over 36 minutes. Garrard played nicely and Dennis Northcut caught a 40 yard bomb to seal the deal.
- Props to the Rams for putting up 31 points with Gus Ferrotte and Brian Leonard. Holt had a nice game, but the defense didn't hold up their end of the bargain. Kurt Warner will be the QB of this team, now that Matt Leinart's hurt. And it serves him right too, don't whine about PT when you're winning. Karma 1 Whineart 0. Edge James had a servicable performance, and Fitzgerald blew up as per usual. The Cards defense scored twice, and could be an NFC West dark horse. Arizona is believing in Ken Whisenhunt.
- Give the Patriots an opportunity, and they'll take advantage of it faster than you could say "Anucha Browne Sanders". Derek Anderson threw 3 first half picks, and New England led 20-0 at the half. Game, set, match. Take note Tony Romo, the Pats 'aint Buffalo. Sammy Morris is looking like an all-pro with his 2nd week above the century mark. The Browns couldn't stop Ben Watson, who's quickly emerging as a stud TE. I knew they let Dan Graham go for a reason. Braylon Edwards was a bright spot for Cleveland, but that may be it.
- Jeremy Green (who will be quoted later) had a fantastic line about the Saints: They're this year's Vanilla Ice, one hit wonders. I hate having to say the same thing every single week! Reggie Bush isn't a durable back, and you can't win when Drew Brees throws it 47 times. And the Panthers weren't a well oiled machine either. They're gonna have David Carr for the rest of the year, and that's not very good. Matt Moore impressed me. When Carolina plays to their potentials, call me. Until then, the NFC South is just plain awful.
- I'm not a Jets fan, but Chad Pennington had me screaming at the TV like some middle aged housewife at a soap opera. I said last week that he should've been yanked, and now Gang Green fans are looking at painfully early mock drafts. 2 days and 4 Advil later, I asked Matt Williamson how Pennington is still starting over Kellen Clemens?
"It is hard to believe. The Jets are horrible and are not going anywhere this year. Get the kid in there. Not to mention, Clemens might be the better guy to win now with anyways."
Please read this Mangini, for the sake of thousands of Jets fans ready to puke every time they play. The Jets secondary would be quite good at flag football, but unfortunately people have to tackle. That means YOU Andre Dyson, who decided to let Plaxico Burress make you look like a mime with an invisible door in front of the wideout. The Giants defense didn't really impress me that much, but their upcoming schedule is so easy, that they'll have a fairly gaudy first half record. Brandon Jacobs finally lived up to his potential of breaking defenses down in the 4th quarter, but he needs to cure his fumblitis.
- A championship caliber team ratchets it up against a quality opponent, and the Steelers defense was dominant without Polamalu, and the o was very good without Hines Ward. Parker and Davenport were perfect compliments to each other, and Big Ben threw 22 times, which is optimal for the type of player he is. One stat tells it all, the Steelers had the ball for 40 minutes and 45 seconds. That's sickdiculous! I asked Ken Moll if Seattle could regroup after this loss, and about their chances in a battle with Arizona for the division crown:
"Sprung, They can regroup but they need to get more consistent on both sides of the ball. The Steelers put it too them but they should get right when back in the NFC. Yes it will be a dog fight with the Cards as Whisenhunt has his team believing. "
- I'll admit when I'm wrong, and on the Redskins-Lions game, I was more wrong than Iranian Nuclear policy and the Eagles Parakeet jerseys combined. I said that Washington would have no chance against the Air Martz offense, and it could not have been more 180 degree opposite. They pressured Jon Kitna and sacked him 5 times, and completely stymied both the air and ground attack. Jason Campbell ate up the poor Detroit defense, and Antwaan Randle El may end up living up to his ludicrous contract after all. Even the reincarnated Keenan McCardell had a couple of catches, and the Lions have to regroup. I asked Jeremy Green about the real scoop on Detroit:
"(The) Lions are overrated. They play better at home because the offense is better in the dome and the D feeds off the fans. They are a bad defensive football team."
In past games, the offense made up for their D's shortcomings. Not yesterday, they ran into a buzzsaw.
-What will happen first, a New England loss or a Miami win?? The hapless Phins not only lost on a game winning 57 yard field goal, they lost Trent Green possibly forever. Neither tean played particluarly well, but Matt Schaub hooked up with Owen Daniels consistently and they were able to win a close game. Ronnie Brown continues to be a stud this season, but that's it. The Texans are clearly improved.
-No Harrison? No Addai? No problem for a team that can run well with numerous interchangable parts. Canadian Football League import Kenton Keith tore up what was a stout Tampa defense, and Gonzalez, Wayne, and Clark each had 7 catches. The Colts are slowly turning into more of a ball control offense, as they held it for more than 38 minutes. Jeff Garcia played OK, but they need an answer at RB. Caddy Williams is out for the year, Michael Pittman is out 6-8 weeks, and they have everyone's favorite Ganga Guru Ricky Williams on speed dial live from drug laced yoga and pilates (that's 2 CFL players in one game recap). And it may be time for some new tools in the shed at WR when your leading receivers are Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard. But on the bright side, they play in the NFC South!
- Denver resident Mark Schlereth pointed out that when people bring up the Broncos, all people can say is "go Rockies". Um, that's not good, especially after you got slaughtered 41-3 at home against the rival Chargers. Whatever Denver had on defense in the past, they dont have it, and need to find it quick or the season will be over faster than you could say "he killed Kenny". Young QB trend alert! Phil Rivers threw it 18 times, and San Diego won by 38. And this may be the only time where Norv Turner doesn't get destroyed. You're a loser, Norv! Damn, so close. Turner and Tomlinson were trouble for the terrible defense, and Antonio Gates just quietly puts out another monster effort. And Travis Henry could join the Ricky Williams year suspension club soon. It doesn't look good for Shanny and the Mile Highs.
-Too believe that a 9-7 game wasn't the ugliest game of the week is pretty amazing. The Niners offense just doesn't have enough weapons to succeed, and the Baltimore defense took it throwback style and the offense did enough to record the dubya. I don't know who gave Steve McNair permission to throw the ball 43 times, but whoever it was should be tasered (a study finally showed that cops do it too often. really??). McGahee pounded the rock well, and Mason had a nice day. It was refreshing to see the B'More defense take it old school, but it was unfortunate that the old school offense came with it.
-I don't know if it was season changing, but Chicago really needed that win over Green Bay. A big reason for the Packers success was their ability to take care of the ball. 5 turnovers isn't doing the job, and they paid for it with the loss. Greise played well for the Bears, and he had to considering that Cedric Benson is running like similarly surnamed Anna would. And she's much better looking than Ceddy is. Chicago did a good job getting the ball to the tight ends, and got a much needed win over the gunslingers.
-Imagine Comic Book Guy saying the following statement: Worst winning performance ever. I don't know how many more ways the Cowboys could've gave the Bills to win. Romo turned the ball over 6 times, but the offense couldn't do jack. They had the game in the bank in the 4th quarter with 3rd and goal up 8. But Dick Jaraun decided to pass instead of run and take the game sealing points, and young Trent Edwards got picked. To the Dallas' credit, they came up big at the end of the game, especially Nick Folk who not only executed a perfect onsides kick, but launched two great game winning 53 yard field goals for the win. Folk was iced with a time out right before the first kick, something that has become a hot button issue across league circles this season. What's Matt Williamson's take on the issue?
"Against how it is being used this year. Just seems in poor taste to me. Not the nature of the rule."
Agreed, the Cowboys need to regroup for their epic showdown with New England. Until then, bench Chad, fire Herm, and enjoy the assault.

Around The Majors- Monday
One team advances, one team goes home, one team wants to put it away, and another wants to die another day. Scores, previews, news, and rumors today on ATM.
The Red Sox OWN the Angels, plain and simple. Curt Schilling put on yet another masterful performance as the Red Sox brought out the bats in a 7 run 8th, and brought out the brooms after a 9-1 win advanced them to the ALCS. They're getting good starting pitching, and Manny and Papi are en fuego, and this team is dangerous. But if the Yankees-Indians series keep going, how will that affect this club. Will it keep them well rested and hot, or will it ruin and slow their momentum?
Joe Torre had his job on the line, and the Yankees bats awoke from their slumber to the tune of an 8-4 win. Johnny Damon is emerging as an all time great postseason player, and Phil Hughes really picked up the slacked as Roger Clemens tweaked his hammy and couldn't get out of the 3rd inning. And there's no way in hell I'm going to go through memory lane talking about how it could be his last ever start. If I had a dollar for every "last Rocket start" I'd probably match his insane contract for this season. The Yankees will trot out Chien Ming Wang on 3 days rest tonight against Paul Byrd, game 4 is at 7:37pm on TBS or on ESPN Radio for all y'all on the go.
Of course the Torre rumor opened up dozens of articles of possible replacements, including Don Mattingly, Joe Girardi, and Tony LaRussa. Another name that may move from the Yankees is Alex Rodriguez, and the Cubs and Angels are chomping at the bit to bid for his services. I wouldn't say that A-Rod sweeps them off their feet, that job would belong to Arizona and Boston respectively. The Philadelphia Daily News listed the free agent CF's, and it was quite the impressive list. Jones, Hunter, Rowand, Cameron, and Japanese stud Kosuke Fukudome. If Rowand is likely to command Eric Byrnes lettuce (3/30) the upper echelon guys are in for a nice payday. In addition to Rowand, Kyle Lohse and JC Romero are among the Philly free agents. The Cubs could be looking to deal Jason Marquis, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Indians 3rd base coach Joel Skinner and AAA skipper Torey Lovullo are among the Pirates managerial candidates, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Pittsburgh Tribune Review adds Trent Jewitt, Bob Walk, Phil Garner, and Ken Macha to that list.

Around The Majors- Sunday Playoffs Special
Two unexpected sweeps, two seasons on the brink, and one huge high profile job on the line. That's all right now.
The Colorado Rockies are climbing to new altitudes every game, as they've advanced to their first ever LCS with a rousing 2-1 win over a Phillies team that had the good pitching but the hitting disappeared into the Blake Street night as the city of Denver can rally around a baseball team for the first time. I don't know what's higher right now, Denver's elevation or the momentum-meter for the Rox. They're getting clutch hits from everyone, their bullpen has been outstanding, and their young pitchers Morales and Jimenez have looked tremendous. They've won 17 of 18, and they definitely have the hot factor to take this thing all the way. On the Phillies side, their nucleus of hitters will remain intact besides for Aaron Rowand who will be replaced by Jayson Werth. They have Hamels, Kendrick, and Durbin in the rotation and this team is certainly not going away.
Please don't notice the young Diamondbacks, they've been comfortable all season long with little fanfare. And they haven't gotten to the NLCS by accident. Their young core of hitters is growing in front of our very eyes. Chris Young, Stephen Drew, Justin Upton, and Mark Reynolds have been contributing and are all 24 or younger. Hudson and Byrnes are locked up, and Webb and co have held down the fort for their surprising bullpeb led by Tony Pena, Brandon Lyon, and Jose Valverde. The Cubs still have a very nice team that will be locked in dogfights with Milwaukee for years to come for supremecy in the NL Central.
It's a season on the brink for the Yankees, who usually thrive with the backs against the wall. It won't be easy against a young and hungry Indians club, especially since New York has shown little to no life at the plate. Maybe to light a fire under the team, George Steinbrenner said today to the Newark Star Ledger that Joe Torre will likely not return if they don't advance to the ALCS. Roger Clemens takes the hill to try to extend this franchise as we know it; a loss may put this franchise at a crossroads in terms or Rivera, Posada, and that A-Rod guy who has as many hits as me in postseason play. Jake Westbrook goes for the Tribe, 6:30pm on TBS.
Did Manny hammer the nail in the coffin of the Los Angeles Angels? The Halos got good pitching in the first two games, but clutch performances from Manny and Josh Beckett have been too much. A game 3 starter in Curt Schilling has Boston's playoff rotation deeper than OJ's legal troubles. Can young Cali Cool Jered Weaver mix up some magic for LA, or will it be another disappointing postseason for a team looking to get some of that 2002 Rally Monkey magic. Will the Sox show that killer instinct, or will a desperation-filled Angels club fill the Hollywood night with hope and one more game in Anaheim? Game 3 at 3 on TBS.
