The Padres and Dodgers are also tied atop the NL Wild Card, 3 games ahead of the Cubs and Braves, 4.5 over Arizona, 5.5 over Colorado, and 6.5 clear of the Phillies.

News and Notes
- Barry Bonds needs 2 more homers to tie Hank Aaron, someone needs to do something before Bonds makes history. Any MLB Mafia anywhere???
- The news is terrible for Cardinals fans. Ace Chris Carpenter needs Tommy John Surgery, and may miss all of next season. The recovery time after surgery will be 10 to 12 months.
- I wrote this yesterday on blogspot, but It'll be written again for those who didn't see it. Pittsburgh acquired Cesar Izturis from the Cubs for a player to be named later. This could allow the Pirates to deal starting SS Jack Wilson. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Toronto, St Louis, San Francisco, and Boston would be interested.

Jayson Stark Rumors
- The White Sox won't move Garland or Vazquez, maybe Contreras.
- Matt Morris would be a good fit for the Dodgers, Padres, Braves, and Mariners.
- If Dontrelle Willis is put on the market, the Mets and Tigers would be at the front of the line.
- Kansas City is working hard to deal Odalis Perez and Scott Elarton, not Zach Greinke.
- One team official thinks that the Rangers won't make any trades. There's a limited market for Eric Gagne. Maybe the Cubs, Phillies, Braves, or Tigers.
- Atlanta will not deal Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Yunel Escobar, but may be willing to part with top prospect SS Elvis Andrus, and hard throwinf lefty Dan Smith. They don't like what the Nats wanted for Dmitri Young, so they're looking elsewhere.
- The Mets have sent signals that they may be open to dealing Mike Pelfrey in a big trade.
- The Phillies have no interest in Perez or Elarton, and they have their sights set on Lohse, Joe Kennedy, and Steve Trachsel. Texas wanted a package starting with Shane Victorino for Akinori Otsuka, but the Phils can't afford that with Aaron Rowand likely to leave after the season. Victorino is the heir apparent in CF.
- Just like Houston won't deal Brad Lidge, Cincy won't trade David Weathers.
- Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler, Luis Vizcaino, Octavio Dotel, and Al Reyes are on the Dodgers' wish list for a reliever.

Additional Rumors
- Scouts from the Angels, Braves, Cubs Diamondbacks, Indians, Mets, Padres, Phillies, Tigers and Twins are watching Nationals players. Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch are players that most teams are asking for. There's still interest in Young anf Ronnie Belliard. (Bill Ladson, MLB.com)
- If the Yankees take a lot of Kyle Farnsworth's contract, the Rockies may be interested. Joba Chamberlain would go into the Yanks 'pen if any reliever is dealt. The Braves could deal Andrus, one of several power arms, Scott Thorman, or outfielders Jordan Scafer and Brandon Jones for Teixeira. The Twins have the biggest need for Adam Dunn, but can't afford his contract. The Tigers could probably get Dunn for Marcus Thames and 2 pitching prospects. The Astros are most likely to deal Dan Wheeler out of all their players. The Red Sox, Indians and Dodgers are interested in Dotel, the latter two teams have the most to offer. KC is interested in LA infielder Tony Abreu. Reggie Sanders will probably be moved at some point. Troy Glaus is a fit for the Yankees, Angels, and White Sox. The Reds are saying that Lohse is available, Arroyo and Harang are not. The Braves and other teams are interested in Texas reliever CJ Wilson, but Ron Mahay is a more realistic option. (Ken Rosenthal)

Draft and College Hoops with Whelliston and Katz
How well can Jared Jordan do in the NBA? Have their been any other pros from Marist?
Kyle Whelliston: I bet he sticks. He's an old-school point guard, and that's a commodity the NBA has too little of (like baseball and left-handed relievers). As for the other question: Rik Smits, of course!

How do you see the Big East shaking out this year?
Andy Katz: Here are my tiers: 1. Louisville, Georgetown, Marquette and Pitt. 2. Providence, West Virginia, Syracuse, Connecticut, Villanova, Notre Dame 3. DePaul, St. John's, South Florida, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Seton Hall. The tiers aren't in order within each number. But that's how I see it shaking out...a top group, a middle group and a bottom group.

Wednesday Trade Rumors

The latest rumors and some talk about the rumors with Keith Law of ESPN and Scouts INC.

Rumors
- The Dodgers could be contenders to land Mark Teixeira if they include James Loney in a deal. They may also want Clayton Kershaw. They'd want either Casey Kotchman or Reggie Willits and a pitcher from the Angels, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and a pitcher from Atlanta, Adam Jones and a pitcher from Seattle. (Dallas Morning News)
- The Yankees may just let Andy Phillips play first base, especially given that there's no signifigant upgrade except for Teixeira, who would cost too much in terms of prospects. (Newsday)
- The White Sox would like to move Jermaine Dye, Tadahito Iguchi, and Jose Contreras. The Cubs may deal for Kenny Lofton or Eric Gagne. (Daily Herald)
- Reggie Sanders wouldn't mind a trade to the Red Sox. (Boston Herald)
- Boston is looking at dealing for Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler, or Scott Linebrink. (Providence Journal)
- The Yankees are trying to trade Scott Proctor for Wilson Betemit of the Dodgers. Atlanta is close to signing Julio Franco. The Yankees are willing to deal any reliever not named Rivera. (NY Post)
- The Yanks are trying to deal either Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth, or Brian Bruney. (Newark Star-Ledger)
- The Cubs are interested in Royals hurler Zach Greinke. (Daily Southtown)
- Troy Glaus could go to the Dodgers. (Toronto Sun)
- The A's may trade Dan Johnson, Mark Kotsay, or Mike Piazza. (Contra Costa Times)
- The Nats could deal Dmitri Young and Ronnie Belliard. (Washington Times)
- Connor Jackson is not being showcased for a trade. (Arizona Republic)
- The Snakes are showcasing Jackson, possibly for either Jon Garland or John Danks. (Chicago Tribune)

Rumor Talk with Keith Law
Will the Reds end up trading Arroyo and Lohse? Will Dunn stay in Cincy because Krivsky's shooting for the moon?
Keith Law: I think Dunn and Lohse are dealt, but not Arroyo. Lot of teams shied away from Arroyo when the Sox dealt him because he couldn't get LHB out.

Why are the Cardinals not mentioned in any trade rumors?
Keith Law: I think they're still hoping they have a good run in them and don't have to sell. But they also don't have a lot to sell, other than a few relievers. Most of their best players are locked up to long-term deals, or are young and shouldn't be traded.

Around The Majors- Wednesday

Today on ATM, a recap of Tuesday's games, some news and notes, fantasy studs & duds, and Tuesday's best rumors.

Tuesday Recap
The Royals scored 5 in the 7th to rip the Red Sox 9-3, the White Sox blew another lead as they fell to Cleveland 6-5 in 11, and Ervin Santana's struggles continue as his Angels fell to Tampa Bay 8-3. A Jeremy Accardo balk in the 9th tied it, and a Robbie Cano single in the 10th won it, as the Yankees continue their winning ways with a 3-2 triumph over Toronto. Nate Robertson outdueled Matt Garza as Detroit shut out Minnesota 1-0. Texas rocked Oakland 11-4, and Baltimore smoked Seattle 8-3.
Houston defeated Washington 4-2, Colorado sent the Pirates to their 5th straight loss 6-2, and Rick Vanden Hurk and the Marlins shut out St Louis 4-0. The Reds edged the Braves 6-5, Milwaukee slithered past the Snakes 3-2, and Barry Zito and the Giants bested the Cubs 4-2. Orlando Hernandez beat Jake Peavy as the Mets shut out San Diego 7-0. Ryan Howard homered twice as the Phillies pounded out 26 hits as they destryoed the Dodgers 15-3.

News and Notes
- Craig Biggio needs only 3 more HBP's to break the all time record. The Long Island native will soon be the king of taking one for the team.
- The trade of Jason Kendall means that A's rookie Kurt Suzuki will take over the catching duties, with recently acquired Rob Bowen to be utilized as his understudy. With Jack Cust playing admirably at DH, it makes me wonder where that leaves room for the currently rehabbing Mike Piazza. If he shows a semi-live bat, a trade is definitely not out of the question, just from a logistical standpoint. And if Oakland can get any kind of OK prospect for him, I think that Billy Beane would be more then happy to pull the trigger. More A's rumors a bit later in the post. The minor leaguer that the A's got back was lefty setup reliever Jerry Blevins. Blevins is a 6'6 185 pound lefty who is 3-2 with 9 saves and a 1.02 ERA in 38 games at high A Daytona and AA Tennessee. He'll report to AA Midland of the Texas league.
- In a huge blow to the Brewers chances of holding on to a tightly contested NL Central race with the Cubs, ace starter Ben Sheets will be out at least 4-6 weeks with a partial tear of the tendon tissue surrounding his right middle finger. Star prospect Yovani Gallardo will take his spot in the rotation.
- As rumored on ATM, Cleveland manager Eric Wedge recieved a 3 year contract extension.
- Chad Qualls was suspended for 3 games, and Scott Olson was suspended by the team for fighting with a teammate.
- Arizona activated Jeff DaVannon from the 60 day DL, and he got the start last night for the Diamondbacks. Jeff Salazar was sent down to make room. The Cubs sent down C Geovany Soto to make room on the roster for Jason Kendall. The White Sox sent down Nick Masset and Joe Crede was transferred to the 60 day DL. Colorado brought up starter Ubaldo Jimenez from AAA, Jimenez is the team's best pitching prospect. Rick Vandedn Hurk was recalled by Florida to make last night's stellar start and Wes Obermueller was designated for assignment. As rumored last week on ATM, the Yankees signed 1B Erubiel Durazo from the Mexican League and sent him to AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre. The Mets placed Damion Easley on the bereavement list and brought up former Royal Chip Ambres. Pittsburgh signed P Daniel Moskos, their first round pick in this year's draft. Texas recalled Robinson Tejeda from AAA and sent down Wes Littleton.
- On tap for today, lots of day baseball. Westbrook faces Buehrle at 12, Snell-Francis at 12:30, and Harang-Smoltz at 1. Cain faces Zambrano in day action at Wrigley, and Billingsley faces the Phils in day action as well. Clemens faces Toronto tonight, Colon-Kazmir in Tampa, and Andrew Miller does battle with Johan Santana as the Tigers face Minnesota (8pm ESPN). Bedard faces Washburn, Maine battles Madduz, and Capuano matches up with Davis in a battle of pitchers who were traded for each other.

Fantasy Baseball with Kevin Rounce
Can rookies like Pence and Hamilton keep up their solid rookie campaigns, and will Bonds still be a good option after he reaches 756?
Kevin Rounce: It's generally unlikely to happen since they have not played this many games before and the league makes adjustments. I like Hamilton slightly better since he has more experience (I mean baseball experience). But Pence won't be horrible either.

Rumors

- According to multiple executives, the Giants and White Sox are asking for too much for Matt Morris and Contreras. Eric Gagne, Salomon Torres, Dotel, and David Riske are some of the relievers on the trading block. Shawn Chacon would like to resign with Pittsburgh. (Denver Post)
- Elijah Dukes admitted that he smokes marijuana. (St Petersburg Times)
- The Phillies could deal for Reds starter Kyle Lohse. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
- Baltimore is not likely to acquire Mark Teixeira. (Baltimore Sun)
- The success of Andy Phillips at 1B has stopped talks of the Yankees getting Shea Hillenbrand and has completely rules out a deal for Teixeira. (NY Times)
- Cardinals team doctors will look at Chris Carpenter today. (St Louis Post-Dispatch)
- Homer Bailey will likely stay in AAA for a while. Josh Hamilton could remain in a cast for his wrist until at least July 27. (Cincinnati Inquirer)
- Duanar Sanchez could come back for the Mets in late August. (NY Post)
- The Indians have been talking to the Rangers about Gagne and Akinori Otsuka. (Akron Beacon Journal)
- Trade talks involving Teixeira have picked up considerably over the past few days, according to Major League sources. The Red Sox, Angels, Braves and Yankees are showing the most interest, but the Giants have also inquired. The Dodgers have Teixeira high on their list of hitters, but have turned their attention to pitching. (TR Sullivan, MLB.com)

Breaking MLB Trade News

The Chicago Cubs have acquired disappointing A's starting Catcher Jason Kendall from Oakland in exchnage for Catcher Rob Bowen and minor league lefty Jerry Blevens. Kendall is on the last year of his contract, which pays him 13.4 million dollars. Kendall is clearly well past his prime with his .226 average and his awful .261 OBP. But after trading malcontented backstop Michael Barrett to San Diego (in a deal involving Bowen) Chicago didn't really have a reliable Catcher, having to play the likes of Geovany Soto, Paul Bako, and Koyie Hill. This gives the Cubbies some stability behind the plate for the stretch run. Oakland not only sheds a bad salary, it gets a solid hitter in Bowen, who could fill the gap until minor league prospect Kurt Suzuki is fully ready to lead the A's into battle. Kendall could join Chicago as soon as Tuesday night. The A's may have gotten the better of this deal, because Kendall is flat out bad right now, and Billy Beane got a decent hitting backstop and an arm. In the first July deal, score one for the Beanester.

Justin Germano and the Padres shut out Arizona 4-0, and 2 Albert Pujols home runs sent the Phillies to their 10,000th loss as a franchise as the Cards romped 10-2.

News and Notes
- Ichiro bruised his knee yesterday against Detroit, but x-rays were negative. If you remember, Derek Lee broke his wrist 4 days after signing an extension with the Cubs. History will apparently not repeat itself in this instance.
- On the day of the Phillies' 10,00oth franchise loss, there was some good news. Tom Gordon was finally activated from the DL yesterday, and will provide some much needed bullpen help. Brian Sanches was optioned to AAA Ottawa. Freddy Garcia was transferred to the 60 day DL. The Dodgers placed reliever Chin Hui-Tsao on the DL, and recalled righty prospect DJ Houlton. Sunday Football Fix and SoccerScope

The latest NFL News and notes, rumors, fantasy football talk with Scott Engel, and MLS talk including David Beckham coming to LA and the new Galaxy look.

NFL News and Notes
Tuesday
Buffalo signed rookie QB Trent Edwards to a contract. Oakland made a very worthwhile gamble by signing Donovan Darius to a contract. DUI charges were dropped against Steve McNair, making the Ravens fans sigh a breath of relief. They were reportedly hiding in their closets, afraid of the prospects of Kyle Boller ever seeing the field for Baltimore again.
Wednesday
Tennessee signed rookie CB Ryan Smith, Denver inked draft pick DT Marcus Thomas, and Baltimore signed rookie OL Marshall Yanda. Bengals LB David Pollack will not play in 2007 because he's still recovering from a career threatening neck injury.
Thursday
Oakland signed LB Isaiah Kacyvenski, and released Bryant McNeal and Kurt Campbell. A judge ordered that Brian Urlacher and his ex-girlfriend attend parenting classes for their toddler. San Diego picked Paul Oliver in the 4th round of the supplemental draft, and Maryland OT Jared Gaither was picked by Baltimore in the 5th round.
Friday
Rams starting CB Fakhir Brown was suspended four games by the league for violating its substance abuse policy. He's quite a talented player, but its yet another player to succomb to substances. Jacksonville OL Khalif Barnes was sentenced 6 months after pleading no contest to a drunken driving charge. Oakland signed 3rd round pick OL Mario Henderson, and Detroit signed MR Irrelevant CB Ramzee Robinson to a deal. The Lions also signed QB JT O'Sullivan. Indianapolis signed star DL Dwight Freeny to a 6 year, 72 million dollar deal which includes a 30 million dollar signing bonus. Freeny was given the franchise tag by the Colts, but has signed a new long term deal.
Saturday
The city of New Orleans has submitted a plan to the NFL to host the NFL Draft. I say it should stay in New York. Dolphins star WR Chris Chambers was arrested on Saturday for DWI. Vinny Testaverde will return to the Patriots for a 21st season. It looks like Vinny really doesn't wanna quit his day job.

Rumors
- A source said that Patriots CB Asante Samuel will either sign a long term deal or agree to his 1 year franchise tag contract by training camp. (Boston Herald)
- Corey Simon was recently activated from the PUP list and may be released soon. (Indianapolis Star)
- The league would like a team in London, Mexico, and Toronto by 2017. (Bloomberg)
- The Cowboys may drop or trade LB Greg Ellis. (Dallas Morning News)
- Denver S Sam Brandon has been suspended 2 games for violating the league's conduct policy. (Denver Post)
- The dogfights on Michael Vick's property followed very strict rules, authorities say. The fighting at Vick's house violated federal law by sponsoring or otherwise taking part in fights for which animals were transported across state lines. Vick has denied any involvement in dogfighting. Regardless, by giving such a detailed account in court documents, prosecutors are sending strong signals about their investigation's focus. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Fantasy Football with Scott Engel
What kind of numbers can be expected out of Brodie Croyle this season, and is he even #2 fantasy QB worthy?
Scott Engel: Croyle doesn't have enough experience or polish yet - I'll be surprised if he holds the starting job for more than four games. The numbers won;t matter because he'll lose the job to Huard at some pointa nd won't be worth a roster spot in fantasy leagues
Will Chris Chambers have a bounce back season, and what should be expected out of Ted Ginn?
Scott Engel: I'm finished waiting for Chambers' big year. I'll pass on him. Ginn will make more of impact as a returner than as a WR in his rookie year.

MLS Scores, Schedules, and Standings
- Thursday on ESPN2, Houston destroyed Chicago 4-0. Yesterday, Eddie Johnson's goal in the 19th minute pushed KC over Real Salt Lake 1-0. Luciano Emilio scored twice for DC and Juan Toja scored twice for FC Dallas in a 3-3 draw. An own goal credited to Eddie Gaven gave Chivas a 2-1 win over Columbus. Andy Dorman's goal in the 38th minute lifted New England over New York 1-0, and Juan Pablo Angel picked up a red card, which is a pretty big deal. Houston takes on Toronto at 8:30pm, and the MLS All Stars will battle Celtic on Thursday from Denver. New England leads the East, 1 point ahead of Kansas City, 2 clear of DC and New York, and 4 ahead of Columbus. Toronto has 18 and Chicago has 16. Houston leads the West with 32 points, 2 ahead of FC Dallas. Chivas has 24, Colorado 17, the Galaxy 13, and just 9 for Real Salt Lake.
Beckham
- Becks will try to make soccer huge here in America, and the Galaxy unveiled their new blue and gold look which I like. Thousands more will see MLS live in stadiums because of it, and this can hopefully be the start of top flight talent heading across the Atlantic and into MLS.
